How to Choose a Topic for a Blog
Your first step in the process to becoming a blogger is choosing what you will write about, now this seems an easy enough task but it may actually determine if you will be successful or not.
First let’s determine what success for you is. If your intentions is to have a place on the net where to express yourself and it does not matter if 10 or 5000 read your blog, than success for you would be just to publish your blog and just write about anything. If you consider successful a blog, by the traffic and amount of money it creates a month, than the topic you choose will make you or break you.
Blogging for Money
Ok you decided that you will become a professional blogger and now you need to decide what the topic for your blog will be, you will probably make the same mistake most noobs make and decide to blog on “how to make money blogging†and “how to blog†of course you have no clue what so ever how to do either, but you will have a site telling others how to do it, mmmmm yeah you will be real successful.
With Bu.bulicio.us I decided I wanted to go for the masses, so I went the general interest route. If I had to do it again I would probably have chosen a specific niche, example: financial, health, sports etc The reason is quite simple, since my site is all over my adsense cpc is subpar, do not take me wrong I still make good money but it is just for the sick traffic I get.
So this is how I recommend you chose your topic. Make a list of 20 things you know about and like talking about. Get that list and go to the Google Adwords Keyword Tool, place each word and see how much traffic it has and how many advertisers are competing for that specific keyword, also see how many combinations are for that key word, the more combinations with advertisers the stronger that niche would be.
Narrow your list to 5 specific topics, now go to Google and search each topic, visit each of the sites that come up on the first 5 pages focus on which are blogs, these will actually be your competition, see how deep each blog is and from the whois find out age of blog, if your competition has less than 3 years and post less than once a day, this is a niche you can be successful if you do things right, like link building and marketing , you should compete well.
And remember if you like shrimp and shrimp is a good paying and searched keyword do not worry about running out of things to write about shrimps.
As Bubba says:
Shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, sautee it. Dey’s uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There’s pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that’s about it.
To Your Success.

Just a quick survey of how many links on each participants article page.
It will eventually be an article but I thought you would like to see the table. I was amazed!
So where were you when I started blogging two years ago? You make some good points about researching your topic. I started with my mission statement and worked from there. My blog evolved over time and now truly represents my interest, passion, and desires and hopefully, money.
Thanks for the article, it’s one I can recomment to any beginners I come in contact with.

Hi Nick,
At the end of the day, if you are happy with your blog and it is providing enough income for you, this is what matters.
But remember never to late to start a second blog.
